Have you guys seen this video? If I was a little braver, I'd try it myself: http://www.monkeysee.com/play/7916-open-a-beer-bottle-with-your-teeth

Brewtopia - perhaps you could elaborate a bit further on how "Brewtopia" does justice to the notion of "open source brewing". It seems to be little more than "open source labeling" of a standard lager and ale: pick your label, pick your choice of payment, done.

While I agree that can be an interesting thing for parties and rockstars, I'm not sure it's at all the same as what Flying Dog is doing here. Was the original beer recipe put together through a collaborative process?

flack - I agree the Denmark-based free-beer.dk company does a good job staying true to the notion of "open source." But Flying Dog never actually makes the claim to being "FIRST 'Open source' beer project" - only that they believe it "to be the first 'open source' beer to hit the market in the U.S." Free Beer is based in Denmark, was started by amateurs (as opposed to an established brewery), and is not available for sale outside of Denmark.

It would be nice to see more focus on a recipe for a hopped-up dopplebock, and less focus on questions of primacy (especially poor ones).

I was reading Sam Calagione's book, 'Extreme Brewing', and read that if you're smart enough to drink beer you're smart enough to make it (obviously, being smart enough to sell it at a profit is another skill entirely) but so far his advice is good. It gives me a new appreciation for craft brews in general and Flying Bitch (Dog) in particular. This is a nice thing you're doing. Maybe it'll be fun as well.
Hey, I never heard back from asshole.
Love ya, Linky

In fact Brewtopia was the very first open source beer company, formed by myself and Business partner Liam Mulhall, we started in 2003 and actually listed on the stock market in Feb of 06. Best of luck guys, enjoy the ride! and it is a ride! happy to help out too!

Keen to see how you go too!

sadly this isn't the actuall FIRST “Open source” beer project (http://www.freebeer.org) but hopefully with flying dog's backing this thing will really take off and get more people into home brewing!
